Counting Sheep (singles '82-'88)

Counting Sheep

I'm lying in my bed and I can't get asleep. My head is full of
melodies and I am counting sheep. DebbieDebbieDebbie I'm so down.
DebbieDebbieDebbie I'm so tired.
I'll stop this counting sheep, they're messin' up the floor and
actually I cannot even stand no sheep no more
let's count something else: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
The sound of clarinets is going round my head. I wonder if these
clarinets will never go to bed.
I can't stop counting sheep, I just can't feel asleep.
I'm lying in my bed and I can't get asleep. I never use them pills
'cos the sandman's sand is cheap. I'm lying in my bed and I can't
get asleep, my head is full of melodies and I am counting sheep.
I'm tired of clarinets go peep-peep round my head, I wonder if
these clarinets will never go to bed.

Bobby, Roger & Eileen

Bobby, Roger & Eileen; two of them will go to the chappel, two of
them will gonna get married. But it only takes two for a tango.
Bobby and Eileen they meet in the park. Bobby likes her lips,
Eileen likes his eyes. Roger and Eileen they meet in the dark,
Eileen talks so smart and Roger never lies.
Bobby, Roger & Eileen; Bobby has some more appeal, but Roger has
the oldest rights. And it only takes two for a quick-step. Bobby
and Eileen they're kissing all night long. Bobby has more money,
Bobby has a car. Roger and Eileen? Roger is writing songs. Roger
is a poet, he has a guitar. Bobby, Roger & Eileen...
Oh Eileen, two and one makes three. Unpleasant luxury. You have to
make a choice in these old-fashioned days. Oh Eileen, these boys
will not give up, they both think they will win, Oh Eileen you
have to make a choice in these old-fashioned days. Bobby, Roger &
Eileen one of them will cry tonight, two of them will go to the
chappel!

Koh-i-noor

Do you know a jewel, walking like a model
sleeping like a princess, talking like a BBC-anouncer
I know such a jewel and her name is Eleanor
the pride of all the country, precious as the Koh-I-Noor
Koh-I-Noor, Koh-I-Noor
Eleanor 's much more than a diamond, than an opal
she is like the Koh-I-noor

her hair is just as golden as in ad on tv
her lips as red as cherries coloured artificially
shame on Mona Lisa, she is gonna lose out
eyesore to my Eleanore, Eleanor is like the koh-i-noor
Eleanor 's more than just a diamond, just an opal
she is like the Koh-I-noor

Eleanor, Eleanor
none of the boys will ever get her, nor will I
she's unattainable like the Koh-I-Noor

koh-i-noor
I'm in love with her

25 kisses

25 kisses for my baby, 25 kisses for my love
25 kisses for my baby, 25 kisses for my love

I give you one two kisses for a quick wink
three four kisses for a smile,
five six kisses for a slow wave
I'm gonna kiss you in a while

I'll give you seven eight kisses for a sweet word
and nine ten kisses for a grin
eleven twelve kisses for a Dutch kiss
oh, I like the love I'm in

thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen
eightteen ninetien twenty twenty-one
and twentytwo and twentythree and twentyfour
and twentyfive kisses I'm gonna give you

25 kisses for my baby, 25 kisses for my love
25 kisses for my baby, 25 kisses for my love
wowow yeah yeah yeah
wowowo yeah yeah yeah
25 kisses for my baby, 25 kisses for my love
25 kisses for my baby, 25 kisses for my love

Ooh wee (my baby's gone)

Ooh wee my baby's gone
ooh wee, she's movin on
ooh wee, away from home
ooh wee, my baby's gone, my baby's gone, ooh wee
away from me, ooh wee,
ooh wee, I want her back
ooh wee, back today
ooh wee, I want her here
ooh wee, here to stay, here to stay, ooh wee
my baby's gone, ooh wee
ooh wee, away, ooh wee

once in a while I'm not out on the tiles
I am not in the bar where my mistresses are
I am not in the place where the girls know my face
where the girls know my name where I misuse my fame
me, Casanova, those times are all over
won't spend no more money to get me some honey
I want my baby back

Darling, if you'll ever come back to me again
I'll be honest, I'll be true to you
I'll be an exemplary man

Tenderness

Smile at me and I will try to see
if I am wrong with all my plans to leave you
talk to me and I will try to hear
if I am wrong with all my plans to leave you
else I'm going, I'm going away from you
and your lack of tenderness

take your chance it's gonna be your last
it's gonna be the last time that I'll listen
all your charms and all your beauty
do not compensate the one thing that you're missing
oh, I'm going, I'm going away from you
and your lack of tenderness

Tenderness is the basis for loving
tenderness, a fact beyond doubt
tenderness is the firmest foundation
tenderness is what love's all about

Tenderness it kindles the fire
tenderness, is what love's all about
tenderness is the top of emotion
tenderness is heaven above
tenderness, you can't do without it
tenderness is the basis of love

I won't try with you no more
with you and your lack of tenderness

Blue Eyes

(Blue, blue is the colour of his eyes)
Beauty is but skin-deep, that's what my papa said
a saying I forgot when you made me lose my head
but after weeks of worrying now I realize
there's nothing nice behind your sweet blue eyes

yaw, yaw, yaw, oh you won't fool me Lou
down down down goes my respect for you
your eyes are blue, but your heart is black, babe
I guess I'm smart, that I'm not trapped by your cheatin' heart
that I'm not wrapped up in your eyes so blue
and your soul so black, Lou

Blue eyes, can't hide the lies
blue eyes won't pay the rent, babe

and the consequence of being vain, my love:
if your victim's all upset don't let him lose his pain, my love
just in time I escaped from your spell, babe
here's looking at you, kid,
come have a drink on me
be a good loser, you win nothing by it, see
your eyes may be blue, but your heart is too black, Lou

Blue eyes, can't hide the lies
blue eyes won't pay the rent, babe

I must admit it, those tears wellin' up are well-planned
perfect timing, my compliments
is it glycerine or did you learn that at the school of arts
wayoyoyoyo, wayoyoyoyo blue eyes

blue eyes can't hide the lies
cute nose can't hide the pose
clean shirt can't hide the dirt
hot legs can't hide the drags
sweet lips can't hide the slips
soft skin can't hide the sin
blonde hair won't get you there
Oh Lou, I laugh at you, at you and your blue eyes!

Johnny's echo

You wanted me so much, now you're set to go
you hung on my every word, now I'm getting up your nose
now I never catch your eye
now I only hear you sigh
from talking 'bout forever to saying: it won't last
from dreaming 'bout tomorrow to dreaming 'bout the past
I know what you've got in mind
but I'm telling you that
Johnny's (Johnny's)
Echo (echo)
Johnny's (echo) is gonna sound forever in your
Johnny's (Johnny's)
Echo (echo)
Johnny's (echo) is gonna sound forever in your head

I've been married several times, all these men have gone
they were thinking one by one they could make it on their own
(see them walking now and then)
but with their eyes down to the ground
(I know what you've got in mind)
yes, I'm telling you that

Johnny's (Johnny's)
Echo (echo)
Johnny's (echo) is gonna sound forever in your
Johnny's (Johnny's)
Echo (echo)
Johnny's (echo) is gonna sound forever in your head

By the docks on the golden river

where All Man's River meets Maria Bay
at daybreak I will wait for you
birds we are and we will slip away
among nightingale and morning mew

now just get some sleep, the hour
will be deep by the docks on the
Golden River I want you to swear
you'll even be there in the cold
light of day

By the docks on the Golden River
what a place to start something new
by the docks on the Golden River
love will row the boat dreams are
the crew by the docks on the Golden
River

And when the tide comes in Maria Bay
we'll leave like in a fairy-tale
and send the witch and wolf who
stay behind our sweet apologies
by mail

Father & son

"Hey son, go to school today!"
"Yes dad, I'm gonna do that!"
"Hey son, say your morning prayer!"
"Yes dad, I'm gonna do that!"
but when my daddy went to work I nosed
in naughty novels did what every boy
would do ("No dad, I've never done that...")

"Hey son, help your mama out!"
"Yes dad, I'm gonna do that!"
"Hey son, let your pa be proud!"
"Yes dad, I'm gonna do that!"
But when my daddy was asleep I climbed
out of the window disco-dancing all night
long ("No dad, I've never done that...")

I was a creepy young guy,
creepy? creepy!
( "No dad, I've never been that!")

"Hey let's go to church my son!"
"Yes dad, I'm gonna do that!"
"Put your sunday trousers on!"
"Yes dad, I'm gonna do that!"
but when my daddy was prayin', I slipped
into the church-yard tried to lay my
little cousin ("No dad, I've never done that...")

"Son, don't mess around
with those men from town!"
"No dad, I won't do that!"
"And don't let love-games
bring you down!"
"No dad, I won't do that!"
now daddy died and here I am suffering
yes, in prison wish that I had meant
those words: "No dad, I won't do that!"

Marinio

By the time they get to wisdom, by
the time they get to flowers in
their hair by the time they're
going underground

Marinio, Marinio,
we'll settle down in nowhere
Marinio, Marinio,
nowhere we're on our way

By the time they come to talk to
us by the time they want a
worthy conversation by the time
they're coming close to us

Marinio, Marinio,
be on your guard against it
Marinio, Marinio,
let's give ourselves a sign
if water comes to wine you
bet your ass the flavour is
gonna lose it's own obstinacy

and by the time they show their
greedy hands by the time they
wanna beat what they can't join
and by the time they stop their
masquerade

Marinio, Marinio,
we'll settle down in nowhere
Marinio, Marinio,
nowhere, we're on our way

For Eliza

there is a song named 'Für Elise'
that almost everybody knows
long time ago since I had piano lessons
I still remember how it goes
as you must know, I have a woman
and her name is Elizabeth
so I play for my Eliza
while she's sleeping in my bed

I can't imagine greater pleasure
than to play some notes away
in the night when the world is resting
from a very busy day
and 'though I know this song ain't mine
it sounds so tender, sounds so fine
so I play for my Eliza
while she's sleeping in my bed

oh my sweet little Eliza
how I love you, how I care
as innocent as a newborn baby
the way you're lying over there
what a girl, what a woman
who am I to have this
I play my song for sweet little Eliza
while she's sleeping in my bed

Beautiful sunny day

A small village in the evening sun
grey-red the roofs, and grey-green the lawns
hardly no traffic on the country road
seems very restful but I'm all abroad
my baby who lives here just took a decision
she has sent me away
it's the ending of a beautiful sunny day

the cemetery's colours green and white
all so peaceful, all so quiet
I'm reading names, I'm reading dates
I gonna sit down on a bench near the gate
the people who walk around here feel sad
so do I in a different way
my baby just sent me from home
it's the ending of a beautiful sunny day
wee wee wee wee

my baby who lives here just took a decision
she has sent me away
it's the ending of a beautiful sunny day

In my hometown

In my hometown lived a girl who turned all the bad and evil into
love. She didn't look so up to date, but turned all the rust and
iron into gold. She had something in her way that made everybody
gay, she was a girl, worth more than a thousand others. Oh I don't
know how to put and I don't know what to say but she was fine, so
fine. On her school she was no hero never won a price on sports,
that kind of things. But when she entered any place it was not
only the doorbell she made ring. She didn't read much in the
bible, heaven was no home to her, but she was worth more than a
thousand angels. Oh I don't know how to put it and I don't know
what to say but she was fine, so fine.
But there's the man from lovely fairy tales; takes her on his
white Arabian horse, runs to where the sun goes down - on his head
a little crown - a dot on the horizon waves goodbye.
Well, some gents will understand why I'm telling this and what is
on my mind. I didn't take part in the action, yes, the credit-list
is missing my own sign. Now there's one thing I regret, reading
back what I just said, but you may guess what I'm thinking now...
(I wish that she'd been mine)

You don't have to tell me how I got to play the blues

On sunday afternoons I'm used to play the piano
in a pub down the cheaper side of town
I'm used to ratata everybody's ass off
I have some hardcore-fans I never let them down,
oh no, well well well
you don't have to tell me how I gotta play the blues!

Now yesterday somebody from the audience was shouting:
"Come over here boy, the drink is on me!"
he said to me: "Guy, you're a wonderful rocker
but you 'd better leave that blues-stuff to someone like me

Now I got mad and went back to my piano
and played the blues just like I can do
and while my piano was terribly weeping
I turned over to him and said: "hey you, oh nananow
you don't have to tell me how I gotta play the blues!

Believe it or not, this guy was a sucker
he said: "that's no blues, that's boogie, dear mate"
I said: "Well, we've just gone out of the forties
I speed it up man, that's my trade!"

He said: "Kid, you must be a fan of John Mayall's"
That was too much for me and I shot him down
I laid his dead body over my piano
and when I played on I was looking around and said:
"hey, dear audience, this is a warning:
you don't have to tell me how I gotta play the blues!

Good things turn out wrong

I remember the times we were together
I remember the sunlight every day
I remember us hand in hand together
why do good things turn out wrong

I remember days without a quarrel
I remember some doors that didn't slam
I remember dinners without flying saucers
why do good things turn out wrong

we've only grown two years older
and we're getting wiser by the day
but we didn't grow together
why do good things turn out wrong

I remember you sitting on the sofa
while I asked you: won't you marry me?
I remember that night and the morning after
why do good things turn out wrong

Blues for Alleksander

Tell me baby: who do you love?
tell me baby: who do you love?
I got these wrong vibrations of jealousy
I got this strange kind of feeling of disharmony
I say tell me baby, who do you love
I say tell me baby, who do you love
Is it a man or a woman or something in-between
is it strong or superficial
who do you love?
'cause somewhere deep inside I got misgivings
that you don't love me anymore
or at least your love has changed

Bitter is the taste

sweet as honey our life used to be
sweet as honey, everyday for you and me
the more bitter is the taste
oh how bitter is the taste, darling
the more bitter is the taste
now that our love is over, now that our love is over

I've been thinking that nothing would change for a while
all the time, all the time I had believed in an everlasting love
in a never-ending love between you and me

bitter is the taste
oh how bitter is the taste darling
bitter is the taste now that our love is over
now that our love is over

everyday it's happening to other people
but I've thought it would never happen to us
I can't shut my eyes to reality
but don't blame me, that I'm trapped in my memories
now that our love is over
now that our love is over
for you and for me baby

Bottle of valentines

Last year I got a ticket for a trip to New Orleans
my fear of flying couldn't keep me away from that
while I knew I wouldn't visit USA that soon again
I planned to take a look at the ol'e Nashville
a tenderfoot is welcome there with a lot of bucks
and the Yellow Rose of Memphis she was mine
so I spent all my money within a week or two
and I even sold my tickets leading back to the Netherlands

papa, keep your hands off of that bottle of Valentines (3x)
you won't stand no alcoholics no more

so now I'm cleaning toilets in a bar in Tennessee
and I think that I will never see my mum again
so I'm crying and I'm wailing and my health is going down
and I'm drinking all the day and night, just to forget

papa, keep your hands off of that bottle of Valentines (3x)
you won't stand no alcoholics no more

now give me more and one more and one more and one more
and I bet nobody'll ever beat my score

Sweet surrender

I picture my prince in my pillow
sleeping quietly I picture his
body in my single bed the blanket
shows more than it hides of his
perfection stardust from heaven
spreads over his face, sweet
surrender, sweet of my heart

I picture my prince in my pillow
breathing softly now all my dreams
and desires are fulfilled I get so
weak, so weak, I'm almost melting
inside the walls of ice 'round my
soul tumble down sweet surrender
sweet of my heart
sweeter than sweet honey
sweeter than the wine so red
sweeter than sugar, sweeter than that
the sweetest thing I've ever had
melancholic angel, precious beast
of beauty
love, daddy is going to sleep now

I put my prince back in the pillow
his hide-away tomorrow night I'll
call him back and I'll say sweet
surrender, sweet of my heart
that's what it is

The girl of no return

Watch out, little boys, you are in danger zone
she is gonna break your heart and break your bones
the more you wanna keep her, the more you're sinking deeper
watch out, little boys, you are in danger zone
for she's the girl, she's the girl of no return
she's the girl, she's the girl of no re-

turn your back on her before it's all too late
now that it's still possible, fight for your fate
she is but a siren with feelings made of iron
turn your back on her before it's all too late
for she's the girl, she's the girl of no return

she's the girl, she's the girl of no return
she's the one who's gonna burn
your mind away, you never get well
when she's finally got you under her spell
she's the girl, she's the girl of no return

Oh, I've seen a lot of friends of mine go underneath
for she's a little vampier don't you see her teeth
within a few weeks you're lying at her feet
but that's the kind of boys this girl don't need

for she's the girl, she's the girl of no return
she's the one who makes you burn
she's the girl, she's the girl of no return
la plus belle dame sans merci
please don't let her in ici
for she's the girl, she's the girl of no return

The bluest man in town

There is a law against cheating and robbing and killing
but you can freely walk over illusions
and break someone's heart
you just said "no" to the bluest man in town
while you know that the bluest man in town
only knows: "no no no"

If I 'd been handsome and sexy and fooling around
but had lost my brains, would you put it the same
now don't lie to me
you just said "no" to the bluest man in town
while you know that the bluest man in town
only knows: "no no no"

how would it be for a difference
to give room to second thoughts
you know: a starving dog licks the sweetest
and his tail rocks on the floor
if you try a little more than just plain: "no!"
(to the bluest man in town)
while you know (that the bluest man in town)
only knows: "no no no"

The dream is over

Quick quick eyes, quick quick choice, quick quick love
you fancy yourself to a man
crying eyes, crying voice, crying face
for God's sake, beware of your tan

oh I wonder what you're gonna do
now that the dream is over
down yonder goes the dawn in you
now that the dream is over

You're much too young and beautiful
your're much too young to know, i know, I know

take a sip, drop the can, take the next
that's what your life used to be
now you're through, I wonder why a second try
is not like the first time for free

oh I wonder what you're gonna do
now that the dream is over
down yonder goes the dawn in you
now that the dream is over
You're much too young and beautiful
your're much too young to know, i know, I know
darling darling darling

come to me and listen here
I give to you this small good-luck charm
now go away and don't come back until you're able
to do no-one harm
You're much too young and beautiful
much too young to know, i know,
I wonder what you'll do
now that the dream is over
I wonder what you'll do
now that the dream is over
